Loxwood

The village of Loxwood lies on the old turnpike route between Newbridge and Alfold Bars, established in 1757 and now the B2133. Here, the fully restored section of the Wey & Arun Canal passes underneath the road just north of the Onslow Arms, which is on the bank of the River Lox (a tributary of the Arun which it joins a couple of miles to the east).

This unposted card, from the Regal Art Publishing Company, London, shows the Toll House (left) and the Onslow Arms with the River Lox in the foreground. The lorry in front of the pub looks to be a 1920s model, giving an indication of the postcard’s date.

Today, the Wey & Arun Canal Trust information centre and shop, next to the Onslow Arms, is also the base for the trip boats which operate seasonal public trips and private charters.
