Rowner Lock & Mill
Rowner Lock is one of the few structures on the Wey & Arun Canal to be recorded on a postcard. This one dates from the early 1900s, by which time the lock had been out of use for thirty years or so.
Rowner has the distinction of being the first lock to be restored by the Wey & Arun Canal Trust in 1982, although it still awaits the return of waterborne traffic.
The remains of the nearby Rowner Mill on the River Arun are also featured on postcards and two are shown here. The earliest mill dates from before 1724, as described in Watermills of Sussex, Vol 2 by Stidder and Smith.
Rowner Lock and the remains of the mill feature in our 2002 documentary The Lost Wey to the Sea.
