Peppering
Here are two views of the lane leading to the river bank, labelled as Burpham but actually part of the nearby hamlet of Peppering. The portrait card shows the side of the Malthouse on the left. Opposite the Malthouse is Oliver's (later Tansy's) cottage which is featured, together with some rare film, in our Burpham video.
The other card shows the view in the other direction with the Malthouse end on the left and one of a row of cottages to the right. These were demolished in the mid 1900s and rarely appear on postcards. Thanks to Trevor Cooper for this image.
Charles and Amelia Haylar are noted as living in the Malthouse in 1915 when they lost their son in WW1. Alfred Charles, a shoeing smith, drowned when the SS Marquette was torpedoed by U-35 near Salonika.
