The Smuggler’s Hut
The name was just one of those applied to an old boat which had been converted into this dwelling by the addition of the thatched roof sometime in the early 1800s. In The Swing Bridge Story, published in 1979, HJF Thompson refers to an earlier publication of 1890 which mentions other names: Noah's Ark, No.1 Wharf Road and Lapstone 1830, as featured in this picture
It was reputed to have been a smuggler's boat in its early days, before coming ashore for use as a dwelling where several families had been raised. Once work on the swing bridge started, it was in the way and so was removed and destroyed.
