The Road over Houghton Bridge
Published by F. Douglas Miller in his Sussex series, this view from the east dates from the early 1900s and certainly pre WW1, as the tip of the steam crane on the wharf is just visible on the right.
The road position of the horse and trap suggests little expectation of traffic on the part of the driver. The central building covered in vegetation is Pebble Cottage, previously the toll house, and was a shop selling postcards such as this one.
For the modern view see our Houghton video.
