George and Dragon

Published by J. White & Son of Littlehampton as part of a series starting with number ‘1’, and probably photographed in 1901 or 1902, this is the George and Dragon pub.

The man standing on the right appears in several of the series and I suspect may be White's son, Arthur, who would have been twenty four in 1901. The landlord of the pub is shown as George West whose family are reputed to have owned the pub for some three hundred years up to his retirement in 1940 (see ‘Good Old, Bad Old Days - the Sussex of Lawrence Graburn’, published 2001 by Southern Heritage Books).

The card was posted in Arundel on September 19th 1905 and sent to Mrs. Romer, Thornton Heath, Surrey.
