Frog
Frog is a 2.4 metre Seahopper folding dinghy, which I purchased as a kit and completed in 1981.
I usually refer to Frog as ‘he’ rather than the traditional ‘she’, perhaps because he is dependable, competent and just gets the job done! He can be rowed or sailed, and is normally powered by an electric outboard motor which gives about two hours endurance at about 4 mph using a 100 amp/hour leisure battery. He can accommodate up to three people with care but his best feature is that he folds flat for transport, or storage, and has a hull weight of just 35 kilos. With a small wheel built into the stern he is amphibious of course, like his namesake.
We have ventured on many waterways over the years, both tidal and inland from Poole to Shoreham and inland to Wales and the Midlands. Since 1982, we have taken part in most of the campaign cruises from Pulborough to Pallingham in the Upper Arun, and there are a host of plaques around the transom to mark these. Various appearances in the press followed a starring role in the documentary The Lost Wey to the Sea in 2002.
The dressed overall photo is from the West Sussex Gazette in 2007 on the occasion of the Chichester Canal Cavalcade.
Frog currently features in several of The Arun Valley Postcard Trail videos.
