Arundel
Arundel is best known for its castle which overlooks the town and much of the Arun Valley. The streets feature many old buildings and are usually thronged with visitors. Town Bridge, at the centre of the town, is five and a half miles by water from the river’s entrance at Littlehampton. There are strong tidal flows through the arches and a significant rise and fall between high and low water levels.
Arundel was a port, accessible by fully rigged sailing vessels, until the construction of the fixed railway bridge at Ford in 1936. Prior to the opening of the Littlehampton swing bridge in 1908, Arundel’s Town Bridge was the first road crossing of the Arun upstream from the coast.
