Rescue of Crew from Italian Sailing Vessel Aniraci, August 6th 1912
Aniraci was heading east on passage under sail through increasing stormy conditions, which eventually blew out most of her sails. The ship had been stranded temporarily off Littlehampton but she was there long enough for most of the crew to be taken off by the Littlehampton lifeboat. Aniraci then continued to drift eastwards, attracting the Worthing lifeboat's attention, before being taken in tow by a tug into Newhaven. The crew rejoined the vessel the following day.
The postcard, ‘Wreck off Littlehampton’, is the view out to sea as the lifeboat departs (just visible near the west works) with Aniraci on the horizon, on August 6th 1912.. On the back is a handwritten account of the incident,
Another card in this sequence by J. White & son shows the onlookers gathered to watch the incident.
Here is a press report published at the time of the incident.
